Jacksonville, Oregon was started in 1851 with the discovery of gold. At one time it was the largest community in Southern Oregon but it was bypassed by the railroad and largely forgotten. It was rediscovered in the 1960s and many of its old buildings and homes were restored. Today the entire town is a National Historic District and visited by many thousands each year.
